Isaiah 40 – Scottish Championships 2007 – Championship Section - Adjudicators Remarks

Opening captures good atmosphere. B has good quality of sound and fine clarity. Great contrast before G – well done. Trmbs not comfortable bar before H. Good horns, and quality sound at I. lovely sop – splendid playing. Good climax in the sostenuto. Excellent solo cornet after J (bad luck flugel). K is convincing – but no side drum ? Good sounds into M which has commendable clarity. Nice style at P and also Q which goes with great panache.

Contrast is well captured at T and solo cornet plays pretty well except for small slip and sharp high Bb. Lovely euph solo with fine silky sound and commendable control. Flugel slip after Voops ! Good dynamic control into Y and lovely band sound – this is very good to listen to. Fine ending.

A very convincing performance, well directed and played. Great contributions, especially from sop and euph, from all soloists. I particularly enjoyed the tone quality of the full band. Well done.

Excellent opening and all generally secure – 2nd baritone almost slurs first 4 notes. Basses not in tune on the unison Eb/Ab in bar 7. Solo trombone shaky bar 2 of A. Superb cornets at A – this is quality. B is superb. C likewise through to the largo at G. This is really excellent playing. Fabulous solo horn at H with just the right support. We have heard nothing anywhere so good up to this band today. This is really stylish.

Everything is in its place. Fantastic soprano contributions at I. The best dynamics today – the climax before J is quite outstanding. Solo cornet excellent after J. Flugel too, with just the odd blemishes you know about yourself in bar 7 of this. Side drum into L where are you ? Flugel not secure at M – this has been so superb up to the missed side drum entry. I hope matters stay good.

Yes, O is brilliant and P too – this really is so detailed and quality – quite excellent overall. Superb solo cornet at T with just the blemish bar 5 into bar 6. Why the re-articulated top Bb 4 before U into 3 before U ? This should be tied. Fabulous euphonium solo into V – this is excellent. Flugel blemishes at V unfortunate – but does not detract. X to Y is superbly sorted out and so clear by the MD. So far this stands out a mile for sheer quality and direction today. Who knows what is to follow ? AA superb. BB excellent. CC likewise. I wish I knew who you were and I wish I could watch !! This was awesome, quality, superb.

What a performance – not without blemish and, as I say, who knows what is to follow? Whatever or whoever, this was a very, very moving and such a well organised performance throughout – everything in its place. Whoever you are, thankyou. That was superb !!
